Weapon BackgroundIt is said that a blade from the fey world, especially one crafted by an eladrin smith, holds a special beauty. The metal of even simple swords could glow with a strange glamour. Through tremendous skill and luck, it is said that steel could be shaped into a blade able to sing the song of its master's heart, and to move with it in perfect harmony.
With the adoption and adaptation of creation forges in Cabus, a number of ambitious smiths attempted to make their own luck. Specifically, they sought to harness the magic and rituals involved in creating an artificial being, to infuse them into their fey-crafted steel.
Many attempts ended in failure. Working the eldritch magic of the fey with the energies of a creation forge proved difficult and expensive. Swords would emerge from creation forges either unchanged or warped beyond use. Refocusing their efforts, a few enchanters thought to make weapons alongside warforged in the hopes that their bodies would serve as some sort of a conduit.
Otto Klaus was forged alongside such a pair of blades. Magically tempered to increase their receptiveness to different kinds of energies, they were attached to the warforged as he was infused with the arcane energies needed to spark life. Already commissioned to build a combat-ready construct, his makers reasoned that they had little to lose should the process fail.
And they thought it did fail. Inspecting the blades removed from Otto's arms where they had been attached, they appeared dull and ordinary. It was only later when the young warforged grasped them in training that the blades took on a silvery polished shine. The effect was hardly noticeable, and although his makers did note that Otto became strongly attached to his weapons, they saw nothing remarkable to suggest that the operation was a success.
It would be years before Otto developed a keen synergy with his blades; long enough for the augmented weapons and their investment to be forgotten by their original creators.
To Otto however, the connection was unmistakeable. He felt a tingle the first time he held the blades in combat training; a vibration speaking of unspoken potential.
Weapon PropertiesAn artist and a perfectionist, Otto has modified and adapted his blades over time from swords into their present unique form. These particular tonfa-like blades allow for a creative combination of stabbing and slashing fighting styles. To the average user, their double-bladed and double-ended configuration makes them precarious to wield, if not difficult to master.
To Otto however, he and the blades move easily as one. He understands them and they do him, allowing him to strike with increased speed and deadliness. The blades almost anticipate where he wants them to go before he moves them to.
In his hands, the blades also serve to reflect Otto's emotions; emotions not easily read behind his unmoving artificial features. In the dramatic heat of battle, they sometimes shine with a faint glow, mirroring his emotional intensity. When Otto's heart leans towards friendship or mercy, the blades hum and purr with gentleness. When displeased, the blades buzz and keen menacingly.
Inscribed on the blades are words in beautiful elven script. They read
"My name is Arael’Sha." In common, the name roughly translates to "heart friend".
Helpful Points of Note / For Discussion - Both blades are considered sentient and level up together
- Blades currently function as reflavoured bastard swords
- Sentient bonus is Brutal 1 for each weapon as a proposed compromise
