(Diary break, Story format from here)
The storm broke over the university, and oh what a great storm it was. Lightning flashed all over the campus and thunder roared like the sounds of battle. It seemed to him that the gods themselves were angered at the audacity of this scientist.
Finally with the brightest flash of light he had ever seen, lightning struck the belfry, and was channeled through the copper wires and arcane conduits straight into the machine that he had built. He could see that his machine was glowing a brilliant blue, and was pulsing in time to the fading rumblings of the thunder. Cautiously he approached the machine and stretched his hand out to touch the casing.
As his fingertips grazed the surface, the machine blasted apart in a blaze of lightning and thunder. It almost seemed as a miniature version of the storm outside was taking place inside the belfry. The lightning from the machine streaked everywhere, jumping in great arcs from one part of the room to the next. Finally it jumped straight for scientist's personal weapon and seemed to penetrate it to the core.
There was another great flash of lightning and a crash of thunder. Suddenly, all was still. The scientist stared in amazement as his weapon seemed to be physically changed and now had with the same blue glow as the prototype machine, but only fainter.

March 14th:
It was... Amazing... The storm... Oh the storm was magnificent! And the lightning... The lightning... I have done it! I have contained the lightning!
March 18th:
I have run the tests on the weapon, it seems as if it has been changed at a molecular level, what was once a blade now seems to be a combination of a gun and a long sword.
March 19th:
Went to the range today, the weapon is... Perfect. No matter what ammo I put in, it always seems to shoot out little bolts of lightning. The blade hums as I swing it through the air. The lightning is... contained!
March 23rd:
Tests are going well, I find out new things about the weapon everyday... Hold on, what's this? Knock at door, continue later...

One day, as he worked in his lab, the door burst open and the dean of the university stormed into the room. With great anger and outrage, the dean accused the scientist of heresy and of sinning against the gods by trying to capture what could not be caught. All the scientist's equipment was confiscated and he was thrown out of the university with only his personal items.
As he walked away from the gates of the university, he promised revenge against the people who had doubted him and swore to harness the lightning to destroy the university.
One day, as he passed through the mountains, he was caught in a storm and so he took shelter in a cave. The storm continued throughout the night, and he slept in the cave. During his fitful sleep, he dreamt of being in great darkness with only great flashes of bluish light punctuating the periods of darkness. As the dream continued, the flashes seem to get quicker and quicker until they seemed to merge into one and he began to hear whispers of a voice coming from everywhere and nowhere. The voice seemed to repeat the same words over and over again: "I am Fulgurion".
The scientist spoke into the light of his dream, "Who are you Fulgurion?"
And the whispers replied, "I am the light which cleaves the darkness, I am the burst which calls forth the crescendo, I am the herald of the storm. I am Fulgurion."
The scientist mind worked furiously, "The herald of the storm? Could this Fulgurion have been the lightning on that fateful night? Could I have done the impossible? Have I managed to harness the lightning?"
A great booming laughter resounded throughout the scientist's dream. "Mortal, do you think it so easy to harness a spirit of lightning? Did you really think that lightning can even be trapped?" The scientist stood up and asked the light, "Then, O spirit, why have you deigned to speak to me?"
"I am here only because I choose to be here. But mortal, you have shown audacity and courage beyond what I have come to expect from your kind, and so I shall stay within this physical form for a while longer. Perhaps you can show me what you are capable of." With that, the voice of Fulgurion seem to subside like the last booming strains of thunder on the wind, and the scientist woke up to the morning light shining into the cave.
He left the cave and continued on his journey, through the forests, and through the mountains towards his final destination, the great capital of Qualibu.
